SailCoach maintains a fleet of approximately 40 ILCA Dinghies, 16 Winner Optimists with a number of charter RIBs at both our SailBases and at major European regattas. This means you never have to worry about transporting your boat and allowing you to fly into our SailBases or regatta venues with your boat all ready to sail. SailCoach has been operating European ILCA Dinghy, Optimist and RIB charters for over a two and a half decades, and we take pride in providing the best service as we are always on-site to help sort out those little problems. No other organisation offers such a wide choice of regattas and services.
Our goal is to enable ILCA sailors from any part of the world to compete on the European circuit or participate in our training clinics with good equipment hassle-free. We are dinghy sailors ourselves, so we understand your needs.
If you are thinking of coming to Europe, please ask us to put an ILCA or Optimist charter package together. We can also supply your coach with a RIB. With our years of experience, we can take a lot of the effort out of competing on the European Regatta Circuit, and we will do our very best to put a package together that suit your needs.
Charter procedure
The usual procedure is to check out your charter boat a couple of days before the start of the regatta or at the beginning of your training clinic. You sign a form acknowledging the boat’s condition upon pickup and pay a damage deposit of €500, and then the boat is yours to the end of the event.
At the end of the event, you check the boat in and sign the boat off, assuming there is no damage. We refund the damage deposit when you have got the all-clear from the charter manager. Any damage to the gel coat (on the hull) will incur a 35 euro penalty deducted from the damage deposit. Spars and foils that are badly bent or broken will incur a penalty of 50% of the purchase price.
What comes with the ILCA Dinghy
Please see below our ILCA Charter pro forma which give you what you need to bring with you for the charter ILCA: –
The SailCoach charter boats are supplied with the following equipment provided * ILCA hull with bailer fitted * Racing padded toe strap, shockcord and toe strap line. * Foils/Blades (centreboard and rubber) * Spars, lower and top mast, boom complete with all fittings attached * XD deck base fittings with cleats, but without blocks * Top cover * Launching trolley
You may not make any alterations to any part of the boat, its equipment, spars or fittings, even if subsequently replaced, without approval from SailCoach. This also applies to replacing the toe strap. If each sailor replaced the toe strap, securing points on the boat would weaken quickly, resulting in failure at the fixing point.
What do you need to bring
Equipment not provided (you need to supply the following)
* Sails * Tiller and tiller extension * Mainsheet block with spring * All control lines with all control line blocks * Traveller blocks * Boom vang * Back bung * Wind indicator * Compass * Personal sailing gear
Please remember all the small blocks for the control systems, as we cannot supply these.
Insurance
Please be aware that our charter ILCA Dinghies do not include insurance coverage. We recommend that you transfer your existing boat insurance policy to cover the duration of the regatta. If this is not feasible, there is an alternative option available below.
We suggest for our European clients considering VDWS Service GmbH, a German company that offers third-party insurance specifically designed to meet ILCA regatta requirements. This insurance package not only fulfils the necessary ILCA criteria but provides coverage for a full year, allowing you to utilise it for number of regattas. The cost of third-party insurance is approximately €39.
To facilitate the process, I have provided you with the contact details for VDWS Service GmbH below.
For North American clients there is optional insurance coverage through Gowrie Group, a reputable company based in the US. For an additional fee of $100 per year, you can add charter coverage to your existing policy with Gowrie. Please note that the charter coverage add-on is only available in conjunction with an existing policy and cannot be purchased separately.
At SailCoach, we have a policy of not taking damage as we trust our clients to be fair and responsible when it comes to any damages or breakages to our charter boats. If there is any major damage, we share the cost equally where possible with the client, with each party paying 50% of the replacement parts. However, we rarely encounter major damages, but this policy ensures that both sides take responsibility.
Please note that any irresponsible behaviour resulting in damage to our chartered boats will be charged at the full repair cost. This includes any gel coat scratches, which on average cost €45 to repair. We take boat maintenance seriously and expect our clients to treat the boats with care and respect.
