Introducing our Pre Optimist Worlds Clinic, a unique opportunity for young sailors to extend their on-water time and skills before heading off to the world championships.

The format for this event is four days of pre-regatta training at the Royal Malta Yacht Club, followed by three days of participation in the Maltese Optimist National Championships. The host club is Birzebbuga Sailing Club, and entries should be made through their website.

We’ve partnered with Pavlo Dontsov, a renowned Optimist coach widely recognised for his coaching expertise. He won the prestigious 2023 Seamaster Award at the Düsseldorf Boat Show for outstanding work with his Ukraine Optimist sailors.

Pavlo is an Optimist coach from the Ukraine and was the coach of last year’s top sailor, Sviatoslav Madonich. Under Pavlo’s guidance, his team has achieved top podium finishes in the most important international regattas.

Overview:
Join SailCoach’s Pre Optimist Worlds Clinic over the October school half term, a unique opportunity for Opti sailors to improve their skills. Coach Pavlo Dontsov leads this clinic, which takes place at SailCoach’s Malta SailBase. This clinic offers great sailing conditions out of the Royal Malta Yacht Club and, some would say, the best sailing conditions in the Mediterranean at this time of year.  With Winner Optimist boats and expert coaching, participants will gain valuable on-the-water experience to develop their speed, sailing techniques, and sail tuning. For parents, Malta’s vibrant culture and historic beauty provide plenty of opportunities for exploring and enjoying the island.

Objectives:
We understand that high performance comes from dedicated hours on the water. Our clinic aims to provide precisely that, with expert coaches guiding sailors to become smarter and faster Optimist sailors. Through on the water drills to improve boat handling, and focused racing training to develop their race strategy, with individual video analysis feedback further improving the learning experiences, this clinic will help equip participants with the skills and knowledge to excel.

Pre-Entry Experience:
This clinic is tailored for boys and girls aged 7 to 15 who have been racing for at least two years and are ready to embark on international competition or enhance their sailing skills for success on their national circuit.

The Program:

27th October 2024: (arrival day)
Arrive at into Malta International Airport (MLA) and be met by SailCoach’s friendly coaching staff member, and they will take you to your hotel or SailCoach’s Malta SailBase at the Royal Malta Yacht Club, the venue for the Optimist High-Performance Clinic.

28th to the 31st of October (clinic days)
From the 28th to the 31st of October, each day of the Pre Optimist Worlds Clinic will feature a group briefing at 10:00 hrs in the Royal Malta Yacht Club, followed by comprehensive training activities until 17:30 hrs.

1st to 3rd of November 2024:
Racing starts in the Maltese Optimist National Championships hosted by the Birzebbuga Sailing Club. The next three days will feature tough racing, with a number of national teams using the regatta as a warm-up for the World Championships. This makes Malta the place to be for anyone heading to the Worlds.

4th November 2024: (departure day)
SailCoach staff will drop you off at Malta Airport between 08:00 hrs and 22:00 hrs for your journey home after some quality training.

To participate in the Pre Optimist Worlds Clinic at our Malta SailBase, located in Malta, from the 27th of October to the 4th of November 2024, we offer a comprehensive package price. This includes airport transfers on designated arrival and departure dates from Malta Airport (MLA), Optimist charter and our world-class coaching. Additional expenses to consider are flights, accommodation, meals, and pocket money.

Please Note: We provide free airport transfers on designated days, and transfers outside these days and times may incur a fee of approximately €20 for city centre hotels by airport taxis.
