What more could an ILCA sailor ask for?
BaseCamp Overview
BaseCamps are hosted primarily in Malta during the winter months and in Valencia, Spain throughout the summer, taking advantage of the best seasonal sailing conditions each location has to offer. Valencia provides reliable wind, flat water options, and high-quality training conditions, making it an ideal venue for final preparation ahead of the ILCA 7 World Championships.
This programme gives athletes access to:
World-class ILCA coaches
A strong group of motivated training partners
The opportunity to focus on physical preparation
More Than Just Training
BaseCamp is built around full immersion. Sailors become part of the daily training environment normally experienced by professional ILCA athletes, benefiting from the natural trickle-down effect of training alongside our regular athletes and coaches. They gain insight into every aspect of high-performance ILCA sailing, from structured training and equipment preparation to recovery, nutrition, and mental focus.
For many sailors, exposure to this environment is eye-opening and often represents a key turning point in their development, helping them better understand what is required to progress to the next level.
What Does the BaseCamp Involve?
Sailors can stay up for our SailBase programs, fully integrating into an Olympic-style training routine that includes:
On-water training sessions
Daily briefings and debriefs
Fitness training (often twice per day)
Recovery, nutrition, and rest
BaseCamp has a broad performance focus, allowing sailors to work on all areas of their sailing. While the programme is primarily aimed at ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 athletes targeting a goal regatta, the real strength of BaseCamp is the variety of conditions sailors experience as weather patterns change throughout the camp.
Training for an extended period allows sailors to work closely with a coach, refine specific techniques, and build consistency. Sessions are competitive, with high-quality racing provided by the other sailors in the BaseCamp group.
Fitness also improves significantly, with regular sessions led by our strength and conditioning coach. This longer training block often allows sailors to address body-weight and conditioning goals in a sensible and sustainable way.
The SailCoach Family
One of the biggest strengths of the BaseCamp program is the environment.
Sailors become part of the SailCoach family, living, eating, training, and travelling together. Friendships naturally form between sailors and coaches from a wide mix of cultures. These experiences are valuable not only for sailing development, but also for personal growth and life experience.
Language and Communication
English is the working language of Team SailCoach. All coaching and daily life at BaseCamp is conducted in English, giving sailors the opportunity to improve their language skills alongside their sailing. Many sailors return home with a noticeably stronger vocabulary and greater confidence communicating in English.
ILCA 6 BaseCamps
We run ILCA 6-specific BaseCamps at selected times throughout the year, including this pre-World Championships training block in Valencia.
