SailCoach Academy

SailCoach Academy Overview

We at SailCoach are leading the way in developing high-performance sailing programmes for both Optimist and ILCA sailors. We believe the future of top sailing athletes lies in programmes that combine education with quality time on the water, supported by the right coaching, environment, and structure, much like what other leading sports have done for decades. At SailCoach, we bring these elements together by integrating academic education with a focused, high-performance sailing programme.

At SailCoach, we bring these elements together by integrating education with a truly focused, high-performance coaching programme delivered by some of the most experienced coaches in the sport.

The SailCoach Academy offers a complete pathway for young sailors who want to take their development seriously. By integrating school, training, and physical preparation into one programme, athletes benefit from continuity, routine, and a clear progression in both their sailing and their studies.

Success at the highest level requires more than talent alone. It depends on expert coaching, consistent daily training, strong training partners, and an environment that challenges athletes to improve every day. Just as importantly, it requires structure, where training, recovery, and education are aligned to support long-term development.

The programme is delivered in collaboration with leading educational institutions in Malta, including the Mediterranean College of Sport and St Edward’s College, as well as options for online learning. This allows student athletes to follow recognised academic pathways while committing to a structured, high-performance coaching programme based at our Malta SailBase.

For athletes looking beyond secondary education, we also support progression into third-level study through the University of Malta, the American University of Malta, or MCAST, a vocational college, enabling sailors to continue both their academic and sporting development within a high-performance environment.

Why SailCoach?

SailCoach has been at the forefront of professional sailing coaching for over 30 years and is recognised as one of the pioneers of private coaching in the sport.

We are a World Sailing Approved Training Centre, one of only two worldwide to achieve this standard. Our coaching team brings extensive international experience, with many having been involved in Olympic campaigns, alongside strong academic backgrounds at degree and postgraduate level.

SailCoach has an outstanding track record at youth level, particularly in the ILCA class, producing multiple World and European champions. The programme has also contributed to four Olympic medals, reflecting the strength and consistency of our long-term athlete development approach.

Life at the SailCoach Academy

Athletes follow a structured weekly programme designed to maximise performance and long-term development. Each day begins with the school programme, running from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm, which includes strength and conditioning sessions. After school, students are transported by minibus directly to our SailBase for training. The schedule includes regular on-water sessions, as well as classroom based work covering tactics, theory, and performance analysis.

We are fortunate to have a strong and competitive group of both Optimist and ILCA sailors within our club programme, providing excellent training partners and creating a highly motivating environment. Each athlete also benefits from a personalised development approach, with ongoing feedback, goal setting, and regular performance reviews to support continuous improvement.

At weekends, the programme allows for a balanced approach. Mornings are generally free, giving athletes time to catch up on schoolwork or, in some cases, assist with the club’s learn-to-sail programme, helping to build responsibility and confidence. Afternoons are typically dedicated to training. Malta also has an active dinghy sailing scene, with regular regattas throughout the winter period, and athletes will often take part in these events, which may occupy one weekend per month.

Education That Works Around Performance

Education is central to the SailCoach Academy, and equal importance is placed on academic progress and sporting development. Athletes attend a structured school programme each weekday, ensuring continuity in their studies within a supportive and focused learning environment.

We work closely with our education partners to provide a schedule that complements the demands of high-performance training. This allows students to manage both their academic responsibilities and their sailing commitments effectively.

Our aim is to prepare athletes not only for success in sailing but also for future academic pathways, including entry into third level education. The programme encourages strong study habits, time management, and personal responsibility, helping students develop the skills they need both in sport and in life.

Accommodation Options

We offer three accommodation options to suit different ages, preferences, and levels of independence. Student athletes can choose a traditional boarding school setup, fully integrated with their academic programme, providing a structured and supportive environment.

For older or more independent athletes, there is the option to live with other sailors in supervised shared, self-catering apartments located close to the training venue. These are organised and supervised by SailCoach staff, creating a safe and team-oriented living environment.

Parents are also welcome to arrange their own local accommodation and stay with their children while they are part of the programme, offering additional flexibility for families who prefer to remain closely involved.

SailCoach was the brainwave of Trevor Millar in 1995. In discussing the idea with his former athlete James O'Callaghan the idea was further developed through the Trinity Business School, Dublin. The company was incorporated in 1996 with the aim of creating a coaching organisation that would help sailors from all parts of the globe to pursue their sailing goals and dreams and predominantly now our sailors are from the emerging sailing nations. However, our mission is about more than just silverware.
