Optimist Coaching

Developing the next generation of sailors

SailCoach’s Optimist programme is led by staff coaches Ruya Cakmakli Denisiuc and Francisco Ruschel, who are based at our Malta SailBase and work throughout the year with a talented group of young Optimist sailors. Their programme combines quality coaching with a strong training environment, helping sailors develop the technical skills, confidence and independence needed to compete internationally.

Alongside their regular training in Malta, the group competes at five to six international regattas each year, in addition to the World and European Championships. This international exposure is an important part of their development, with SailCoach Optimist sailors already achieving top 20 results at international events.

What SailCoach offers

International Optimist Clinics

Four times each year, we welcome guest coach Pavlo Dontsov to work alongside the SailCoach team. Pavlo brings extensive international Optimist experience, including coaching a sailor from his team to an Optimist World Championship title.

He leads four key SailCoach clinics each year: two from our Malta SailBase around Euromed and New Year, and two from our Valencia SailBase around OptiOrange and during July.

These clinics give ambitious young sailors the opportunity to train in an international group, prepare for major events and experience a high performance coaching environment.

SailCoach Academy and the Mediterranean College of Sport

Through our relationship with the Mediterranean College of Sport, young Optimist sailors can combine their education with a structured sailing and athletic development programme in Malta.

Students study at the College, take part in its fitness and physical development programme, and train on the water four times each week under Ruya and Francisco. It gives young sailors significantly more time on the water while allowing their education and sporting ambitions to develop alongside one another.

Bring Your Own Coach

National teams, sailing clubs and private training groups can also use our Malta and Valencia SailBases while continuing to work with their own coach. Our fleet of Winner Optimists is available for charter at both locations, together with the facilities and support needed to organise a training camp through SailCoach lite. Depending on the programme, this can include Optimist charter, coach RIBs, accommodation, airport transfers, classroom facilities and boat storage.

From Optimist to ILCA

A pathway beyond the Optimist

For us, Optimist coaching is about more than the next regatta. As sailors grow and develop, we can help them prepare for the transition into the next stage of their sailing career. With SailCoach programmes extending from Optimist through ILCA youth sailing and into Olympic campaigning, young sailors can remain within a familiar coaching environment as their ambitions develop.

Professional Coaching

SailCoach was the brainwave of Trevor Millar in 1995. In discussing the idea with his former athlete James O'Callaghan the idea was further developed through the Trinity Business School, Dublin. The company was incorporated in 1996 with the aim of creating a coaching organisation that would help sailors from all parts of the globe to pursue their sailing goals and dreams and predominantly now our sailors are from the emerging sailing nations. However, our mission is about more than just silverware.
